Rena and Glomma coming into form

Ryggfinnen til en stor harr.
Grayling in Glomma and Rena can grow to serious proportions.

After a pretty wild season two of our main rivers are entering a phase with what some might call normal conditions. After a summer of alternating high winds, water levels or temperature a period of «normal» could in fact be perfect.

The Rena is looking exceptionally fishy at the time of writing. Dropping water levels and reports of proper hatches of both diverse Baetis sp. and Ephemerella ignita should bring a smile to all those who can visit the rivers these days. Caddis pupae will come, but might be delayed. There are no hard and fast rules to these things, it seems. Everything is late and late in the season that’s usually a pretty good thing.

The early bird gets the worm

Reports of good fishing before noon are ticking in. We expect good opportunities for daytime dry-fly fishing for quite a while, as long as the winds don’t pick up.

If you find a big river like Rena a bit daunting, rest assured that help is available. Both John Bond at Rena Fishcamp and other guides like Martin Mikkelsen know the river like the beck of their hand and can show you the ropes. When conditions are a bit outside the norm like this year, a guide’s local knowledge can be invaluable and can be easier to book on a short notice than in July.

Glomma and Kvennan Flyfishing

Like Rena Glomma has a lot to offer for a long time still. Reports of both hatches and catches are coming in as the water level, air and water temperatures have normalised. The number of other anglers are dropping as well, as the majority of visiting and local anglers reluctantly get back to their day jobs.

Those who can should jump at the opportunity and get their fleis wet in Glomma and Rena in the coming weeks. And the same goes here: when conditions are a bit strange a guide can make it all make sense again. Marius Tollan and Hein van Aar are experienced guides and know both the main river, tributaries and surrounding lakes well.

Tight lines!
