Fishing in the Glåma and Folla Rivers in Alvdal
Fishing in the Glåma and Folla rivers within Alvdal municipality, as well as in the Sølna River downstream of the Sølndammen dam, offers many miles of varied and exciting river fishing. The area is known for its healthy stocks of grayling and trout, providing both local and visiting anglers with wonderful nature experiences in peaceful and scenic surroundings.
The Glåma River through Alvdal flows wide and calm, winding its way through the landscape like a slow-moving river. At Steimoen, the river becomes shallower and faster. In most places, the river is around one meter deep, but it also contains deeper channels reaching up to a couple of meters. The riverbed varies between sand and silt in the calmer sections, and gravel and cobblestones in the swifter stretches.
Along the calmer sections, there are good numbers of large whitefish and grayling. Trout are less numerous, but there are large trout that thrive on small fish in the river. Pike and burbot are also present, and pike in particular can reach impressive sizes – fish over 10 kilos are not uncommon.
A challenge in such slow-flowing river systems is that it can be difficult to read the water and determine where the fish are holding. Deeper pools and channels are often good holding areas for larger fish. At the outlet channel from the Savalen hydropower plant, large numbers of fish may gather at times, especially when water discharge increases. During such periods, significant numbers of large grayling can appear here.
Fishing Tips
Spinners and wobblers can work very well, especially in spring and early summer when fish are active. Worm fishing can also be effective for whitefish, grayling, and trout.
Fly fishing from the bank or from a boat is a popular method, particularly in calm sections where grayling and trout rise. Targeting deeper channels and pools increases the chances of encountering larger fish.
