Stage 11 – Rena and the ridiculous hatch The journey is soon over, but we saved some of the best for last. The wonderfully chaotic and intense caddis pupae madness of the Southern Rena river, sometime late July or early August.
Stage 10 – Intense dry fly action in Isterfossen At the outlet of lake Isteren the warm summer nights bring hatches that work like a magnet on large fish that typically reside in the big lake.
Stage 9 – Galthodet, the kingdom of big whitefish We are still relaxing at Galtsjøen in Engerdal. Galthodet is only a short boat ride away from the last spot we fished, Galtstrømmen.
Stage 8 – Galtstrømmen, in the footsteps of Englishmen Galtstrømmen lies between Galthåen and Galtsjøen, downstream of Isterfossen. This is one of the truly classic fishing spots in Engerdal, and a portion of both Norwegian and International fly fishing history.
Stage 7 – Kvennan Fly Fishing on a short line When Glomma has dropped to normal summer levels the grayling party is ready to start at Kvennan Camping. If you get tired of catching grayling, the river is also home to some very large trout, is easy to wade, and is packed with variations.
Stage 5 – Classic currents on Engeråa This stage should be timed with the hatching of Norways’ largest mayfly, Ephemera Danica. When they rise up from the riverbottom and pop out of their nymph shell, big trout and grayling enter the river from Engersjøen.
Striking out in Femundsmarka The well known angler Jan Lillestu was excited to get to Femundsmarka and start the fishing season early… possibly being the first one to fish it this year.
Stage 4 – the search for arctic char Once we set off on this step of the journey it becomes totally dependent on weather. The most ideal would be a stable high pressure system with little wind, just after ice off. A few clouds and light rain to spark off the hatches would be nice, but we most definitely do not want northwest wind and cool weather.
The season is underway at Valebjørgheia in Fyresdal! The trout here are known for being super active and in good condition. There are already very nice fish being caught this season!
Stage 3 – Vangrøfta, the jewel of Dalsbygda The journey continues from Sømåkvolvet to this little gem of a trout stream in Dalsbygda, 650 meters over sea level.
Stage 2 – surrounded by lakes in Sømåkvolvet Now we head north, from the big trout hunt in Rena onwards to Sømåkvolvet to relax a bit. The goal here isn’t the largest trout, but very nice trout, a fish dinner or two, and the opportunity for gorgeous arctic char in small lakes. And if you’re still yearning to make a cast, then the river Sømåa runs through the valley below.
It’s summertime in Rendalen Mistra and other rivers in the area have finally settled down to nice summer flows. Storsjøen is filling up, and almost to summer water levels.
Stage 1 – Drifting Rena We begin our journey with high hopes of huge trout. Renaelva is one of the best rivers for intense caddis hatches during late summer. But it is the early season when the biggest fish are caught.
